Don’t want to be an American idiot. Don’t want a nation under the new media. And can you hear the sound of hysteria? The subliminal mind fuck America.

I’m sure most of you have been watching Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution.  If you haven’t, why the hell not??  Anyway, have you ever looked at the food your school’s serving?  Em eats lunch at school 1-2 times a week.  I’m proud to say that one of those days is on Friday when they do a fruit plate instead of a salad.  Granted, I don’t know what exactly is ON this fruit plate, but Em loves fruit and she does love it.  She’s tried most of the things at one time or another.  At the first half of the year she LOVED the pizza.  Always wanted to eat in the lunch room when it was served.  I think they changed distributors or something because now she hates it.  Anyway, I was looking at her menu this week and was, quite frankly, apalled at Monday in particular.  Here’s what they’re serving:

  • Hamburger on whole wheat bun OR Reduced fat cheese fries
  • Baked potato rounds
  • baked beans
  • fresh fruit
  • hot cinnamon apples
  • OR Chicken Tender Salad/Vegetable chef salad (vegetarian)

They have a salad every day and it’s an alternate choice that none of the kids get.  So, tell me, where the hell is the vegetable in that?  The rest of the week, of course, isn’t great either.  Let me show you it:

  • Tuesday:  Crispadora with Cheese Sauce OR Quesadilla(vegetarian), Lettuce/Tomato, Seasoned Corn, Fresh Fruit, Chilled Peaches, Cinnamon Roll OR Chef Salad/Vegetable Chef Salad(vegetarian)
  • Wednesday:  Popcorn Chicken OR BBQ Plate, Cornbread, Mac & Cheese, Black Eyes Peas, Oven Fried Okra, Fresh Fruit, Mandarin Oranges, 100% Juice Bar, OR Chicken Caesar Salad/Vegetable Caesar Salad (Vegetarian)
  • Thursday:  Pizza(vegetarian) OR Baked Ravioli & Homemade Roll, Seasoned Green Beans, Fresh Garden Salad, Mixed Fruit, Strawberries & Bananas, OR Chef Salad/Vegetable Chef Salad(vegetarian)
  • Friday:  Turkey Corn Dog OR Chicken Tender Wrap, Baked French Fries, Lettuce/Tomato, Fresh Fruit, Applesauce, Homemade Reduced Fat Cookie, OR Fruit Plate (vegetarian)

Yeah.  Can you play “find the vegetable?”  Me either.

I’m glad to see Jamie’s program worked for Huntington and that people seem to be affecting real change.  I do think some or possibly even a lot of that was staged.  That radio DJ?  That can’t be for real.  But still, whatever works.  But we don’t live in Huntington.  We live here in the outer ‘burbs of Atlanta and here?  Here they’re still serving crap to our kids.
