/wave I’m back. And I can finally post about what we did this weekend. I know you’re all on pins and needles. /rolleyes
Friday we woke up early and drove down to Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach. It was about a 7 hour drive with a stop for lunch and a short bathroom break at another point. We listened to two Judy Moody audiobooks. Very exciting, I’m sure. We got to the hotel about 3pm. Here’s where I’ve got to do an endorsement because we LOVED the hotel. It was a Hampton Inn. If you’re familiar with Amelia Island, it’s the one on Sadler, just before the roundabout. Anyway, it was great. Our room was normal sized, as was the bathroom. We had a fridge and mini microwave, which was nice. But the beds? First, they were actually really comfortable. And my back and hips are really picky about beds. Also instead of the regular awful, flat bedspreads, these had super fluffy duvets. And the sheets were very soft and nice. They had a large, free breakfast in the mornings with cereal, yogurt, muffins, breakfast cakes, waffles, coffee, juice, eggs, bacon or sausage, potatoes, etc, etc, etc. They had a treasure box out each morning for the kids with small toys. They did fresh cookies from 4-5pm every day. They had beach chairs, toys, and boogie boards for loan for free. I was highly impressed. We were also super lucky because FIL paid for our room! Anyway, we were there at the hotel Friday and Saturday nights.
Friday when we got there, we greeted the family and hung out in the rooms for a bit. I had a monster headache that would NOT go away. We went out for dinner to some local Italian place that was not great. Our waitress was a first class bitch. She was super condescending about everything. Our table was weird and very narrow. The food was okay, but nothing special. The drinks were weird, as was the kid’s menu.
Saturday, we got up and went to the beach. It was very overcast. The sun only came out for about 5 minutes, but we were there and the kids wanted to go. It turned out to be very comfortable. We were there about an hour and a half. We came back and showered and changed and hung out. The kids played with each other for a while. (I’ve probably mentioned it, but Chris’s sister has a son who’s 10 months younger than Em. He’s very much a boy and Em doesn’t have any boy friends, but they play pretty well together.) We went downtown and had lunch at a local Mexican chain called Peppers. It was SUPER yum. After lunch, we decided to walk around a bit. Well, all but Chris’s mom. She sat in the car. We ended up at a candy/ice cream shop. The nephew got blue ice cream that, in typical boy fashion, he got everywhere. It was too cute. We headed out to the local theatre, and Chris, Em, MIL, and I saw Harry Potter (/SQUEE!!! – I think the movie deserves it’s own post, so more on that later). FIL, SIL, and nephew saw Cars 2.
We went back to the hotel after that for a while before we got ready to head down to the pub for the surprise party. Now, BIL’s bday is actually in December. But we usually come down to visit them every summer and by doing it at this point, it’s much easier to surprise him. She had it all planned out with a baseball theme and everything. They had it in the back room of this Irish Pub. There was even a themed menu and everything. It was very cute. We sat with the fam and some girl who was friends with SIL in HS. We didn’t know most people there and it was REALLY loud, so yeah. Our kids were the only 2 kids there, but they behaved pretty well. He was suitably surprised and fun was had by all. We were the first to head out after the cake was cut and I hear it turned into a more adult-type party from there. I think they went to some clubs and swam on the beach at 2am. /lol
The next day, my monster headache was back again. We wasted a ton of time hanging around the hotel, but most of the people from the party were super hungover. Eventually around 11am, we drove to SIL’s house for the rest of the weekend. We all unpacked and someone went for a grocery store run. We did a pool trip while some people watched the Women’s World Cup. A sporting event I actually wouldn’t have minded watching, but oh well. I still had a giant headache and there were two people at the house waiting for a later flight out that I have no idea who they were. They were really loud though, so my attempts at a nap didn’t work at all. I was pretty anti-social and stayed in the bedroom though. Eventually we went to the pool and my headache left at some point. The temp was actually pretty moderate and we were slightly chilly with the wind on wet skin. We came home later and did pizza and hung out. We watched part of Iron Man and then True Blood before we all went off to sleep. Chris hogged the bed and it was hard, so I didn’t get to sleep well. At one point, I went to sleep on the couch, but someone was already there.
Monday, we got up early and hung around forever waiting for MIL & FIL to come to have breakfast. Once they got there, we ate and decided to go to the zoo in Jacksonville. The choices were that or a children’s science museum. Honestly, I really would have rather done the museum for a few reasons: We’ve had season passes to our zoo for the past 3 years and we were tired of it. We just decided not to renew this year. The zoo is mostly outside and HOT. And the science museum sounded way more interesting. But most people seemed more interested in the zoo, so I didn’t say anything and off we all went (Except for MIL…she stayed home by herself). It turned out way better than I thought. This zoo is WAY more spread out than our Atlanta Zoo and I totally liked it better. It was really hot, but in the shade (which there was a good bit of) with a breeze it was nice. They had a really cool area where you could feed the giraffes yourself. And they had a splash zone where the kids got totally soaked and loved it. On the way home, we stopped for a snack at McD’s. Since we had breakfast so late, we pretty much skipped lunch.
We got home and relaxed a bit before doing the local Peppers (again, but no one minded) for dinner. We came back and watched Hall Pass before crashing. The next morning we got up around 7 or 8am and headed home. Em was a bit whiny, but not too bad. We got home yesterday around 3pm, just before it rained. Today, I got up and did some yard work that about killed me and drove out tons of sweat. Chris is now driving up to my parent’s house to pick up our dog. Em’s sitting here reading a big stack of magazines while I write this long entry.
Depending on when Chris gets back, we might go see Harry Potter again today. If not today, then this coming weekend. Em wants to see it 2 more times before she goes back to school. Friday she’s got a dentist appointment to get sealant put on her back teeth. She’ll probably have a sleepover with her best friend at some point next week. Then next Thursday is open house when we meet her teacher, find out who’s in her class, and who her new bus driver is. Then Monday, it’s back to school! Where did the summer go?
